Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

Noel Gyger January 30 to February 6, 2011

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: We had a lot of rain during the week but most rivers held their shape.
The Skeena River is in good shape but full of ice flows and frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on the ice ledges! There may be some Steelhead wintering over in some locations. The Trout and Dolly Varden Char are available year round.
The Kalum River came up a little bit but is still in good shape.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is coloured up and fishing for Steelhead is slow. The upper section closed for fishing on January 1st.
The Lakelse River is in fair shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout should be Ok now since the weather warmed up. Lake ice fishing has started and the
fishing is good. Beware of thin ice!
Kitimat River: Early this week we endured sub zero temperatures and the onslaught on Ice Rain. Where we parked our vehicles for a couple hours, we had to chip the ice off our windshields. Mid week’s warmer temperatures combined with clean river conditions produced good numbers on Trout. The weather warmed up and we received some rain the river was high and dirty at the time of this Report. (Friday)
Douglas Channel; The colder temperatures and the Ice Rain deterred boaters from venturing out. Warmer temperatures are forecast for the weekend which may encourage some boaters to venture. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.
Prince Rupert has fantastic Winter Chinook fishing, weather depending. If you would like to book a comfortable, warm Charter Boat for Winter Chinook and Dungeness Crab in Kitimat or Prince Rupert please contact me noel@noelgyger.ca anytime.

There is a New! guiding and fishing destination for 2011 being developed in the far northwest of BC and Alaska Rivers where you can: "fly fish for and catch salmon, steelhead and trout until your arms will feel like they will fall off!" Kitimat River Early this week we endured sub zero temperatures and the onslaught on Ice Rain. We you parked our vehicles for a couple hours, we had to chip the ice
off our windshields.

Mid week's warmer temperatures combined with clean river conditions produced good number of Trout. The best method for fishing for Trout on the Kitimat River is float fishing with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Float and the Kitimat Combo. The Kitimat Combo is a Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait Worm and a Bubba's Bait Barn http://www.bubbasbaitbarn.com/ Dew Worm. The weather warmed up and we received some rain the river was high and dirty at the time of this Report. (Friday)

Douglas Channel The colder temperatures and the Ice Rain deterred boaters from venturing out. Warmer temperatures are forecast for the weekend which may encourage some boaters to venture. Stay tuned.

Jan 30 Glen Kilcup of Fish Hawk Guiding reports, "Well it wasn't long after the sun arrived that Mike and I got out to test drive the jetboat on this perfect winter day...we'll be going again! We started using Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ planer boards with mad flash Storm http://www.rapala.ca/ hot n tots on the terminal end. Both of us had fish on at different times in the same pool but they managed to come unbuttoned. Later we changed to spoons. Mike had the Illusion 65 made by Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com / and was able to land this respectable fish....good job Mike! Hot n Tots are specific crank bait from Storm http://www.rapala.ca/ which I introduced to the region allot of years ago. Bringing them from my childhood Bass and pike fishing, to the western world of Salmon and Steelhead, they have proven to be again one of the most effective lures for big game fish I have ever used. For more info on how you can get into some of these with all sizes and colours not available locally, drop me a line." Well done Glen and Mike. Thank You sharing the photo and excellent information.

Special Report - Irrigation Lake

Jan 22 Glen Kilcup of Fishawk Guiding reports, "Here's a respectable brookie I caught this weekend. I attended the 2nd annual ice fishing derby at Irrigation Lake where the biggest fish caught was 1 pound 10 ounces. I landed 8 fish and lost 5 but was not able to place, but my partner Mike cashed one in at 1.2. He ended up in 6th position. Not very many fish were even weighed in as the day for most was fishless. Good clear, warm weather prevailed for most of the weekend here but the lakes were very watery and slushy with still 2 feet of ice. The day turned out to be allot of fun and success for organizers Calvin & Brenda Glaim of Houston. With a wide variety of sponsors and donations, the proceeds go to the houston food bank. Good job guys! Next year they claim it will be bigger and better again! Lots of derby info will be posted on Facebook. The Brook trout pictured here was quite close to 5 lbs and was released. Salt water krill was my bait of choice and has always proven effective in winter and in all lake trolling situations. Good times........"

We are Booking for the 2011 Fishing Season. Any interested Anglers please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca.

Thank You to everyone who provided photos and info to this Fishing Report.

Good Health, Good Fishing

Sincerest regards, Ron Wakita

January 3, 2011 – Alexandra Morton Update

Hello:

The Cohen Inquiry is churning away quietly, many of you may have heard that its' final report has been delayed. I am working to prepare for the Aquaculture portion - which is a time-consuming effort as there are 100,000s of documents to be made sense of. It is very unfortunate the final report has now been delayed a year, but I am doing everything possible to make this matter. I believe this is an extremely significant process, even though I have become cynical of government processes. For those of you on Facebook, there are some dedicated people attending nearly daily, Elena Edwards and Sabra Woodworth, and they are writing as they sit in the Inquiry. Much of it has been tedious by the sounds of it but I am thankful of the effort they are putting into this.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?ei ... 5692098919

Anissa Reed has made us a Valentines' Day card - For the Love of Wild Salmon - which you can download and send to whomever you like, but we are hoping many will send it to the King of Norway, to let him know we love our wild salmon too much to risk them and want salmon feedlots to move out of the ocean and you can also send them to our elected members of our government.

http://www.salmonaresacred.org

I have sent our letter to the Minister of Fisheries asking that she do everything possible to find out if a retrovirus is infecting our wild salmon, where it came from and how we can minimize its' affect. You can see it at http://alexandramorton.typepad.com/ we cleaned up the language and included the comments because there is such a diversity of voices in your comments. If more people sign I will send it again. you can sign here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewfor ... QVJxU3c6MQ

To keep informed on developments worldwide you can visit: http://www.farmsalmonfacts.com/

Or visit my blog. Any support is welcome to help us keep up with the demands of the Cohen Inquiry.

What kind of boats do the guides use (drift boat, jet boat or raft, etc)? What have other anglers caught at this time? Are there any pictures? What was the biggest fish? What was the weather like? How do I get there? What do I need to bring? Are there any testimonials? YES, go here http://www.noelgyger.ca/testimonials.htm for testimonials.

Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I’ve been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we’ve noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren’t using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer. noel@noelgyger.ca
