Bought a cast net - will play with it this weekend

Postby allingeneral on Fri Sep 26, 2008 9:23 pm

So, I bought a cast net. It's an Old Salt 7-foot with 3/8 inch square mono mesh. I think it's about right for catching some baitfish for catfishing the Rappahannock and perhaps could catch some baitfish on the Potomac for stripers as well. I'm gonna take it out to the front yard tomorrow to see if I can figure out how to throw it. Here's a youtube video that might help...

I have three of them, 1 in the boat, truck and garage....all of them are 4 footers.....where I get bait thats all I need, a 5ft is ok but 6 or 7 is a pain to throw anyway.......I have about 15 other castnest in a bucket that are ripped to shreds and I need to get the lead off of them someday.....

Well, I just took it and tried to throw it about 6 times. It didn;t work out too well...I need to practice. The damned thing won't open! heh. Will try it again later. WOuld like to get it figured out before going down to the water and making a fool of myself :)

I tried to use the cast net yesterday and caught one shad out of about 20 throws. I also caught several small (6-inch) catfish and a couple of small striped bass. I must not have been in a good spot for bait...and my throwing technique isn't the best... I need some coaching or at least to watch someone throw it who knows what they're doing because I SUCK!

I'll try it another time or two...if no luck, then I'll buy a smaller net to start out with and move to the 7-footer another day...
