Almost forgot, try a Shakespeare Ugly Stick. Its probably my favorite rod. They are basically indestructible and a combo can be purchased for around $30.

Glad to hear that your getting into the great sport of fishing. You said you were looking to catch some catfish. A great bait to use is chicken livers. They will stink but catfish love them. I went to Bass Pro and bought the plastic worm kit that came with 414 pieces and it has worked great. If something isn't working I can switch it very easily. I have found that dark colors such as purple, blue, and grey/green has worked very well. Also I like throwing crankbaits quite a bit to.
