Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak
Mahi Smith s.jpg

Jeremy Smith, CEO of GSE Gas Company from Ohio, along with his friend, Eric Owens, just finished off a job here in Fort Lauderdale and decided to charter the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. Winds were out of the east northeast at 12-17 mph, seas 3-5 ft., temperatures in the low 80's. Our request from Jeremy was to bring some Mahi Mahi back to Ohio.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started out with two plainers, one with a blue and white sea witch and the other with a pink and blue sea witch, both had double hooked Bonito strips. For surface baits we went with three Ballyhoos and one Ballyhoo daisy chain.

There was a slight color change heading off to the northeast – this would be a good place to follow. As I followed the color change, a rip started to form with turtle grass and sargassum weed mixed in. The further I followed the rip offshore, the better it formed together off of Fort Lauderdale.

Mahi Mahi right short coming in!!!! Jeremy was our first angler and he reeled in the Mahi Mahi. From there both anglers kept picking away at the Mahi Mahi’s. A tree branch appeared on the rip. As I circled the branch, I could see the Mahi Mahi’s in the water. With every pass, the anglers caught more Mahi Mahi’s, while Jeremy and Eric also took pictures of each other catching their fish.

With 10 Mahi Mahi’s in the box and smiles on both anglers faces, it was time to return to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. The fish were fillet for the anglers so that they could take them back on their flight home to share with their families the following day.
