Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Ken Brown and son, Steve, from Orlando returned to land from cruising the Caribbean and needed more of the salt water so they chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the east at 12 mph, temperatures in the mid 80’s, seas running 3-4 ft – a beautiful sunny day.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock at Bahia Mar, lines were in the water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, located 1.8 miles from shore in 120 ft. of water. We started off with two #8 plainers, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a chartreuse sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip. For surface baits, we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips. Our objective today was to catch edible fish so I started trolling east and west over the drop off while headed towards one of our 34 artificial wrecks located in Fort Lauderdale, ranging from 520 ft. freighters to 30 ft. barges.

As we were trolling with our plainers in 180 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale, line exited the plainer rod at a fast past, as the rod tip bounced up and down, which is a good indicator that the blue striped Wahoo was at the end of the line. Ken was our angler and kept reeling the line in. Before Mark, our mate, could grab the leader, a Sailfish appeared at the end of the line, to our surprise. Never jumping or exiting out of the water. Mark grabbed a hold of the bill to bring the Sailfish in the boat for picture taking and then was released to fight again.

After that we made a drop at one of the wrecks and produced a 38 lb. Amberjack. From there we kept trolling around catching three Black Fin Tunas and two Mahi Mahi’s.

With fish for the dinner plate we headed back while the anglers retired into the a/c salon aboard the Happy Day Today for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Fort Lauderdale 33316.
