Fort Lauderdale Fishing Happy Day Today

Brandon Jendrusch from Texas, along with friends, John, Joe and Jim chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the east at 15 mph, seas running 3-4 ft, with blue skies.

Brandon has been trying to catch a Sailfish for the past couple of years with no success, and with conditions looking very favorable; I went right into kite fishing over one of my favorite wrecks sitting in 145 ft. of water south of Fort Lauderdale, FL. With a north current close to 2 knots, I set up two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the rigger south of the wreck. As the wind picked up, I was bringing in one of the kites to change it out. With the bait twenty feet from the boat and the fishing line in my hand as I was releasing it from the kite line, the black shadow appeared. Dorsal fin out of the water and bill chasing the bait as I held onto the line! If I would have dropped the line, the bait would have immediately head towards the bottom, so I waited till the Sailfish grabbed the bait, then I released the line. The Sailfish played with the bait for what seemed to be an eternity, but actually was only two minutes. When the Sailfish accelerated, Mark, our mate, locked the reel and the fight began – Brandon was the angler and he jumped into the fighting chair to capture his first Sailfish. Twenty minutes later, Brandon brought the fish to the side of the boat for picture taking and release.

I went back to the same wreck and repeated our set up. Twenty minutes later a dorsal fin appeared on the right short kite bait. My mistake – one on the left short kite bait – no, it’s a double header!!!!! Both Sailfish came out of the water immediately showing their magnificent neon colors, one heading north and one heading south. John grabbed one of the rods to do battle and Joe grabbed the other rod. As we settled in for the fight, Joe’s Sailfish pulled the hook. John continued to enjoy the battle with the Sailfish. Fifteen minutes later, the Sailfish was brought to the side of the boat for picture taking and release.

With two flags flying to our credit, it was time to head in from our afternoon chartered. All the anglers retired into the a/c salon aboard the Happy Day Today for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
