Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Dale Rake owner of Rake Unlimited from Wisconsin chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Dale invited his employees and friends, Jerry, Terry, Mike, Jesse and Harry, on this fishing excursion. Winds were out of the east at 7 mph, seas running 3-4 ft., temperatures in the mid 80’s, while the sun played peek-a-boo. Our request today was to capture edible fish to provide a seafood platter for tonight’s dinner.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water off the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. Due to our extreme drop off, if you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you would be in 500 ft. of water.

We started out trolling with two #8 plainers – one with a pink and blue sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip and the other with a blue and white sea witch. For surface baits we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips. We trolled the reefs in depths from 80 ft. out to 190 ft. of water picking away at a couple of Kingfish. From there I headed off shore where I ran across some floating debris and we caught two Mahi Mahi’s and one Black Fin Tuna. I ventured off a little further where we made some drops winding up with six Tilefish.

With time running out and a good variety of fish for tonight’s seafood platter, it was time to head back. All the anglers relaxed in the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
