Los Angeles Area Fishing Charter

Post by fredman »

Hi all.

My family and I will be headed to LA the first week of April for spring break. I am looking for any suggestions or referrals for a fishing charter out of that area. I will be staying about a mile from Redondo Beach pier, but am not against driving a little if the price and catching opportunities are better. it would be for 3 people who all have fishing experience.

I don't really know what I want to fish for, since I really have no idea what there is to catch this time of year. I would prefer something offshore, since I normally fish for bass on small rivers on the east coast. How much I want to spend is still up in the air, as I don't know if I want to go on a head boat with lots and lots of people or a smaller boat that is a little more specialized.

If I had a choice, I would prefer to go after something a little larger (tuna, shark, etc) than standing shoulder to shoulder with 60 other people, dropping a hook to the bottom and hoping for something to bite it (but if that's all there is, I'll do it). I'm not looking to take home a lot of fish, but more for the experience and some new stories to tell!

Any suggestions folks have on what there is to fish for and who to go out with, would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about LA except that I'm glad I'm not there! :)

That said, here are a couple of links that might help you out.

Seems like there's a lot of action out of Marina Del Rey...

So, after going to LA and having a few nice days of weather, we were finally able to get out on a charter. We chose L.A. Harbor Sportfishing in San Pedro.

I'll keep it to a minimum, but do NOT recommend them as a charter.

The boat was great, but the Capt and deckhand were not there to provide assistance (they were more interested in fishing and showing off how many they could catch versus the customers) and the loaner equipment was horrific! One reel broke as soon as we tried to use it and anothers' gears were so badly stripped that it couldn't handle the weight and a 8" fish at the same time without slipping and grinding.
