The summer has proven to be an excellent fishing year in both the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon. This time of year anglers need to be up early and hitting the water before dawn has been the key to a successful day. With record temperatures this summer the shallow flats heat up fast making the fishing really slow down in the afternoon. Temperatures have reach over nighty degrees by mid day all this week. I look forward to fishing at night this month for snook, tarpon, sea trout, and redfish on the Indian River Lagoon in the Sebastian area. The bait is thick and bite has been red hot at night. The best part is we have the spots to ourselves and temperatures in the high seventy's. These trips tend to start around midnight and run until six am. This gives the opportunity to fish lighted docks, mangroves, and bridges for snook. Just before the sun starts to rise the tarpon bite has been red hot inside the rivers and channels. Fish in the 20-40 pound range have been schooling at first light crashing the mullet pods.
If you plan to fish the Mosquito Lagoon for the large schools of big redfish make sure you set your alarm clock because it will be an early start! On most days we are greeted with slick calm waters and redfish tailing in super shallow water on the flat's. Sight fishing these large fish is a rush as they make their long runs on light tackle. Sea trout are mixed in with the schools of redfish making for some great top water action. If you have never sight fished for big tailing redfish, this is the month for you inside the Mosquito Lagoon. Each day clients had consistent shots at redfish throughout the day. Casting accuracy will be the determining factor on how many fish will be boated. Good casts usually resulted in a hookup redfish from the school, and bad one will spook the schools.
