Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

Noel Gyger

November 7 to November 14, 2010

Dear Fishing Friends: :welcome:

Photo of the Week:VIDEO PREVIEW: Commentary by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters Nov. 5, 2010. Wes Owen with his comfortable 11ft beam Bayliner "Lil Kris" invited Noel Gyger and me for a morning trip in the Kitimat Harbour to fish for Winter Chinook and do some Crabbing. The forecast was calling for "Cloudy with Showers". We were pleasantly surprised with calm seas, sunshine, good fishing and even better Crabbing. We hooked 6 Winter Chinook, boating 3 beauties. The largest Chinook was 25lbs or better. The Stars of our fishing trip were the "E-Chip" which is marketed by Pro Troll, Pro Troll's Hot Chip 11" Green Flasher and Hot Spot's Blue Green Flasher. 4 of the 6 Chinook were caught with these lures. Pro Troll products are not new on the market but this was the first fishing trip that I have fished with them. I spent some time with Russell Gahagan, Pro Troll's Regional Sales Manager at the Redl Show http://www.redlsports.com who impressed me enough to fish these Pro Troll products. I am sure glad we did because they sure worked great this morning and the proof is in the pictures! The other 2 Chinook were hooked with Wes' favorite Winter Chinook set-up which includes a Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Abe and Al #1 Prism Flasher with a Rhys Davis Blue/Green Anchovy Teaser and a Rhys Davis Anchovy. Noel, Wes and I had a great time catching Chinook as well as harassing each other and eating Gail's cookies while watching the rods. The "piece de resistance" of our trip was the Crabbing. The Star of the Crabbing portion of our trip was as always "Brutus" Ace Line Hauler http://www.acelinehauler.com/ Crab and Prawn Puller. Vartan you are a genius! We were also using Crab traps distributed by RedlSports http://www.redlsports.com/ with an upgraded hinge design on the doors which are excellent. We were using Lead rope from Danielson which reduces the potential for getting the Crab Trap ropes into the prop. The Crab Traps used are Traps distributed by Redl Sports. The Bait Cages were Danielson Bait Cages. The Crab Gauge is made by Gibbs/Delta http://www.redlsports.com/ . Wes fishes with the best equipment including Shimano http://fish.shimano.com/ 8' Talora rods and Charter Special 2000LD reels combined with Scotty http://www.scotty.com/ Orca Rod Holders. Scotty Electric Downrigger. Scotty Power Grip Plus Release Clips. Reels filled with Berkley Big Game 30lb test. The leaders were Berkley Big Game 40lb test. He also used a Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Battery powered hook hone. The High Line was trolled with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ 12oz Slip Weight. The lure of choice was a Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Les Davis Pt. Defiance #6 Spoon with an E-chip attached to the leader. All the Chinook were netted with Redl Sports http://www.redlsports.com/ Sea King SK5000 net. He takes all his photos with Cannon hi end digital cameras. The "Right Tools for the Job" sure makes Fishing and Crabbing a lot more enjoyable. We kept our limit of 18 Dungeness Crab (6 each) and put another 12 keepers back. Wow! Good Weather, Good Fishing and Good Crabbing with Good Friends. Life is Good!

Title: Winter Chinook and Crab and listed in category 2010 Chinook Clips. Clip #0082. Plays for 11:53 minutes.

SUMMARY: Weather has been fair all week with rain on the weekend. There is lots of snow in the mountains. Steelhead is the only river target fish now along with the smaller resident Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden Char, Bull Trout and White Fish. Fishing for Steelhead, Trout and Char using fly, spin and conventional gear has been good. The Skeena River has been dropping all week and is in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead continues although most fish are in their tributary rivers by now.
The Kalum River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is fantastic!
Kitimat River; Early in the week there were some frosty mornings with clear, sunny afternoons. This weather allowed many folks to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Fishing, hiking or hunting are the more popular activities that are so much more enjoyable when the weather is nice. On Wednesday we received our first snow, followed by rain and clouds. Despite the rain the river conditions remained good and Trout fishing also continued to be very good. Lots of Trout have been caught with both tackle and with flies.
The Kitimat Harbour is Red Hot for Winter Chinook and Dungeness Crab. Book your charter now noel@noelgyger.ca . Check out the Ron Wakita report below.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is clean enough to fish and I have many reports of some great Steelhead catches with both fly and spin rods. This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Ariel Kuppers and Jeff Carlson. Thank you to the fishing guides who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!

Bulkley, Kispiox, Babine and Morice River report as follows:
Sorry, no report from Smithers this week but will the cooler weather I would assume river conditions are good which means the Steelheading should be good also.

Kalum River
Is in good shape both upper and lower end and fishing is excellent for Steelhead. Please do not target the Coho as it is closed and most of them are on their spawning reds now. Both spin and fly is working well.

Lakelse River
Is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is excellent. Please do not target the Coho as it is closed and most of them are on their spawning reds now. Both spin and fly is working well.

Skeena River
The Skeena River is in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Trout is fair but it is getting late for Steelhead.

Zymoetz (Copper) River

Kitimat River
Early in the week there were some frosty mornings with clear, sunny afternoons.
One Fly angler reports that while catching a bunch of Trout he was surprised to hook something big. He lost it but he thought it was a Steelhead. The Kitimat River has a very small run of Winter Steelhead and there are always a few caught in the winter while anglers are fishing for Trout. The main Steelhead Run on the Kitimat River is in March, April and May.

Nov, 8 Ariel Kuppers and Travis James landed 4 Cutthroat fishing one of the tributaries of the Kitimat River. Ariel and Travis were Float fishing with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Float and the "Kitimat Combo". The Kitimat Combo is a Bubba's Bait http://www.bubbasbaitbarn.com/ Dew Worm comboed with a Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait 3" Worm. The first version of the "Kitimat Combo" was originally fished on the Kitimat by Pat Oliver who was a previous staff member of our Tackle Store and one of my Associate Guides. Pat has moved to Vancouver but his creation of the "Kitimat Combo" fishes on. Ariel has added the Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait Worm to this combo and this version works as well. The proof is in the pictures. Well done Travis and Ariel!

Nov 12 Jesse Houston fishing the upper Kitimat River for Trout. He reported that he didn't catch any Trout but he caught a bunch of Coho and a 10lb Hatchery Steelhead. Wow! "This is the first Steelhead that I have caught this time of year" said Jesse. Jesse released this Steelhead back into the Kitimat River. Well done Jesse and Congratulations! Well done Hatchery Guys!

Summary

The Kitimat River will continue to produce good Trout fishing throughout the winter. Anglers beware that there are lots of Coho still around (please note it is closed for Coho) and the odd Steelhead. Just ask Jesse! We are indeed fortunate to live close to and fish the Kitimat River that is enhanced by the Kitimat River Hatchery. Jesse's Steelhead and the excellent numbers of Cutthroat has rekindled my appreciation for the hard work that the staff at the Kitimat Hatchery have done to enhance the Kitimat River.

Douglas Channel
Nov 10 Philip Thom reports hooking 10 Winter Chinook during his last outing with his fishing partner, Jason Bunn, "the outing before that we hooked 8". Wow! Well done Philip and Jason! Please take the time with future fish to take some photos to share with the readers of this fishing report. Congratulations on a Great day!

November 11 Ferd Wuensche reports, "Today was an exceptional day on the water. Using a Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Abe and Al flasher with a Luhr Jensen blue Coyote Spoon we fished deep for Lunkers. My fishing partner Ray Hepting and I caught our limit with fish weighing up to 28lbs and many in the high teens". Well done Ferd and Ray! Thank You for the photos!

Nov 12 Victor Lick reports catching his limit of Winter Chinook every time he went out this week. Victor uses his favorite Trolling set up which consists of a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Flasher and a Hoochie. Victor usually fishes by himself in his Sail Boat so it is difficult for him to take photos. Wes, Noel and I were out fishing alongside Vic last weekend and we were fortunate to take a few photos of Victor with his catch. Well done Victor! Good Luck this weekend!

Summary
The Winter Chinook fishing this week continues to be very good and so has the Crabbing. I love Winter Chinook fishing as well as the Crabbing. We get spoiled by being able to eat fresh Crab almost any time in the summer so it is a treat to have fresh Crab in the winter,

The Winter Chinook fishing also gives me an opportunity to test new lures and flashers. Like most anglers, I have my favorites but I also enjoy trying the New Products coming onto the market or into our area. Who knows…one of these may replace one of the favorites.

The new kids of the block for this week are Pro Troll Hot Chip Flasher and Baitrix http://www.baitrix.com/ Large Strip Teaser UV Purple Haze inserted into a Rhys Davis Strip Teaser.

On a political note: This year’s early closure of Halibut to the Recreational Sector has become a bone of contention for me. I feel it is grossly unfair that the Department of Fisheries has allocated 88 1/2% of the Halibut stocks to the Commercial sector and the remainder to the Recreational Sector. Once we catch our 11 1/2% quota as we did by Oct 18th this year, Halibut is closed to Sport anglers. Halibut should be enjoyed by all Canadians and the DFO mandate is to manage the resource equally to Sport and Commercial. I am not sure what calculations our Minister of Fisheries is using but 11 1/2% is NOT equal. I urge all concerned anglers to email Minister Gail Shea <Shea.G@parl.gc.ca> and let her know your thoughts. The Sports Institute has a form letter you can use or I would be happy to email you a copy of mine. Please contact me if you are interested wakita@telus.net. It is very, very important to send her your personal letter. It does not require a stamp to send a letter to the Minister...Just an envelope and a few minutes of your time.

Minister Gail Shea

I do not wish to offend anyone with the politics nor do I wish to end this Fishing Report on a political note.

Winter Chinook fishing should continue to be good. Here's hoping that it will be good tomorrow!

We are Booking Driftboat Trips, Jet Boat Trips and Salt Water Charters for next year. Any interested anglers please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca

Thank You to everyone for providing photos and info to this Fishing Report.

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I’ve been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we’ve noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren’t using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer.
