Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Normal winter fishing weather all week for winter Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden Char. The average day time temperature was plus1 degree Celsius. There has been a little snow and rain but not much wind.
The Skeena River is in good shape but full of ice flows and frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on the ice ledges! There may be some Steelhead wintering over in some locations. The Trout and Dolly Varden Char are available year round.
The Kalum River is low and in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is good.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in poor shape with lots of ice flows and ice ledges. If you can find open water the Steelhead fishing should be pretty good. The upper section closed for fishing on January 1st.
The Lakelse River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is fair. Lake ice fishing has started and the fishing is good. Beware of thin ice! See a full lake report below.
The Kitimat River has produced excellent numbers of Trout and higher than normal numbers of Steelhead so far this season. The catch rates to date have been influenced by the favorable weather and river conditions. This week the river conditions were good but the weather was wet and cold. The hard core anglers who braved the elements were rewarded with pretty good catch numbers of Trout and the odd Steelhead.
Douglas Channel; Lori from MK Bay Marina received reports of increased numbers of Whales, Sea Lions and Porpoises roaming around the Douglas Channel. Lori also observed larger numbers of Sea Gulls circling above the water in the Kitimat Harbour. These are typical signs of the Herring and/or Baitfish moving into the Kitimat Harbor. I think it is a month too early for the main Herring spawning season but there definitely signs of larger numbers of Herring or Baitfish moving up the Douglas Channel into the Kitimat Harbor. Unfortunately this week's strong winds have prevented boaters to get out fishing for Winter Chinook that are normally follow the Herring or Bait fish. The winds were so strong that Lori reports that she had to lock the front door of the
Mk Marina Restaurant and Store to keep the wind from blowing it open. With more favorable winds in the forecast many boaters were heading out this weekend to find out what the Sea animals are chasing. Check out the Ron Wakita report below. IMPORTANT HALIBUT ISSUE Needs Your Immediate Attention!!
The Clock is ticking and there are 24 days before Halibut Season opens. The SFI just posted a catchy phase on their website:
EITHER WE STAND UP NOW OR BE STOOD UPON FOREVER!
We would like to acknowledge and Thank everyone who has taken the time to send a letter to the Minister regarding the DFO Halibut Allocation Issue. The Alliance that is being organized by the Sport Fishing Institute to oppose this policy is growing but the DFO Minister needs to hear from all Canadians and every angler who wishes to fish for Halibut in the future. Many Unions are also considering joining the SFI Alliance. There are many Halibut Anglers are not aware of this Halibut Issue. We need to increase awareness of this issue in every community across Canada but we need your help.
I (Ron Wakita) recently wrote a letter to the Editor for the Kitimat Northern Sentinel (copied below). This letter is self explanatory and contains all the up-to-date, pertinent information required to inform Anglers of the DFO Halibut Allocation Policy issue.
We are asking Anglers from all across Canada to write a similar letter to the Editor in every community across Canada. Anyone who is interested, please use my letter as a template, make any changes you wish and then send to the Editor of your local newspaper. Feel free to contact me wakita@telus.net or SFI info@sportfishing.bc.ca for any assistance . These letters to the Editor would be a huge contribution to the cause. Once informed, the facts speak for themselves. Every Canadian should be appalled by this grossly unfair distribution of a Canadian Common resource. Please also send your Letter to the Editor to the DFO Minister. The Minister needs to beware that this grossly unfair Conservative Government policy will be judged by every Canadian.
Please help spread the word and encourage others to write or email the Minister. If everyone does a small part, collectively we can make a big difference.
To the Editor:
The intended purpose of this letter is to inform all Recreational Anglers of the Department of Fisheries and Ocean's (DFO) Halibut Allocation Policy. The specific injustice of the current DFO's Halibut Policy is that it allocates 88% of Halibut Stocks to 436 Commercial Halibut License Holders and 12% to the rest of the Canadian population who are potential Recreation Anglers. How a grossly unfair distribution of a Canadian Common resource exists defies common sense. I can not believe that the Conservative Government is allowing the DFO Minister to enforce this unfair policy. Furthermore, because of this policy, Halibut closed to Recreation Anglers Oct 18th in 2010 while the Commercial sector fished on. This is not a conservation issue, it is a misallocation of Halibut Stocks.
The Sport Fishing Institute estimates that if the current DFO Halibut Allocation Policy is not changed Halibut will be closed to Recreation Anglers as early as July 2011.
The Sports Fishing Institute, B.C Wildlife Federation (BCWLF) and the Sports Fishing Advisory Board (SFAB) have been negotiating with D.F.O with no success. The only way that this absurd policy is going to change is for the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to receive a letter or email from each and every Recreational angler and indeed from each and every Canadian who thinks this policy is wrong.
The importance of letters or emails to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Minister Gail Shea Shea.G@parl.gc.ca can NOT be emphasized enough. If everyone does their part by sending a letter or email to the Minister collectively we can make a difference.
The Sports Fishing Institute (SFI) has just formed an alliance with the B.C Wildlife Federation (BCWLF), the Southern Vancouver Island Anglers Association and the BC Federation of Driftfishers to right the imbalance of this unfair allocation of Canada's Halibut resource. This alliance has also launched a website http://www.sfibc.com to provide information. They are also asking other groups to join this alliance. Please contact Alison Obrecht at SFI if your group wishes to join. alison@sportfishing.bc.ca We are hoping every Fishing Group, Rod and Gun, Chamber of Commerce, Labour Union and many other groups join this alliance.
SFI is also coordinating the efforts of individuals by requesting that copies of letters and emails to the Minister be sent to info@sportfishing.bc.ca
Please also send a copy of your letter or email to your Member of Parliament. Our MP for Skeena is Nathan Cullen Cullen.N@parl.gc.ca
The voice of everyone who thinks that the DFO Halibut Allocation Policy is wrong, needs to be heard in Ottawa. Please send an email or letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. I also urge everyone to forward this info to everyone in their Address Book.

River Reports
Kalum River Is in good shape both upper and lower end and fishing for Steelhead is excellent. Both spin and fly is working well. It is a little cold but don’t let that deter you from going fishing. Even though the weather has been cold this river usually does not freeze over. It has something to do with the warming of the water flowing out of Kalum Lake. It will freeze if the water level drops very low and if it stays cold and starts snowing heavily. If it is cold enough the snow will not melt when it hits the water. The flowing snow clumps together and jams when it hits the rocks and boulders. The river current in some places nearly stops flowing and if it remains cold it will freeze over in these areas that are like lakes. This seems to happen every few years or so. Lakelse River Is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is good. Both spin and fly is working well.
Lakelse Lake Ice fishing has started and catches of Trout is excellent. See the Ron Wakita below.
Skeena River The Skeena River is full of ice flows, ice ledges and is frozen over in some locations. Please be careful walking on the ice. Fishing for Steelhead is over. There may be some Trout available.

Zymoetz (Copper) River The water is low and in good shape but has substantial ice flows and is frozen over in some locations. I have had reports of excellent Steelhead catches using both spin, conventional and fly gear. Reminder: No fishing above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below) Zymoetz Canyon Jan 1 – June 15. You can still fish below the sign all winter.

Dec 26 Arty Horianopoulos reports, "I caught this beautiful steelhead doe on the Kitimat River on Dec. 26 fly-fishing with a black egg-sucking leech. Just before catching this one, I caught a nice cutthroat trout and a male coho! My son took these pictures when I got home; unfortunately it was getting dark. Take care." Wow! Congratulations Arty! Thank You for sharing the photos and the info for this Fishing Report.
Jan 5 Ariel Kuppers and Justin Lowes landed 5 Cutthroat on the upper Kitimat float fishing with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Float and the Kitimat Combo. The Kitimat Combo is a 3" Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait Worm comboed with a Bubba's Bait http://www.bubbasbaitbarn.com/ Barn Dew Worm. Justin also lost a Steelhead a few feet from shore. The difference between victory and defeat is only a few feet. Congratulations on a pretty good of Winter Trout fishing on the Kitimat River.
Jan 6 Justin Lowes and Mike Campbell landed 3 Cutthroat on the upper Kitimat using the Kitimat Combo and a Single Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Egg with a 3" Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait Worm. I think Justin was looking for the Steelhead that he lost the day before. Justin did not find the Steelhead but you won't find them if you don't look. Congratulations Guys!
Jan 7 Ariel Kuppers and Justin Lowes fished the upper Kitimat in hopes of Justin hooking his new elusive Steelhead friend. Justin did not find his Steelhead but Ariel landed a dandy of a Cutthroat. "This Cutthroat was pushing 3lbs." said Ariel. Wow! Congratulations Ariel. They were also float fishing with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Float and the Kitimat Combo.
Summary
The Kitimat River will continue to produce good numbers of Trout providing the river conditions remain good even if the weather is not optimal. Layering with Simms http://www.simmsfishing.com/ Fleece under their Simms Waders and Rain Gear ensured Justin. Ariel and Trent stayed warm and dry to enjoy the Winter Trout fishery. Stay warm and Fish On!

Steelhead prediction for 2010
Just glancing over the Skeena Tyee Index for Steelhead as of August 12th, and must say the numbers look encouraging. The 1998-2002 seasons were the glory years, and those of you fishing then probably have many fond memories of that period. The numbers this year show the closest to those wonderful times over the last ten years.
Of course, a lot of things can happen, and often do when it comes to fishing. But by nature anglers are more glass half full than glass half empty people and time on the river is really never wasted. As Roderick Haig-Brown so wisely said "If fishing is just an excuse to be close to rivers, I'm glad I thought of it." Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I’ve been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we’ve noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.
I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren’t using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise.
