December inshore/nearshore report Jacksonville area waters

Post by cosbyrec »

The month of November has provided some great fishing. The speckled trout mysteriously appeared en masse after keeping a low profile in prior months. I've had several days with over 60 trout with many being keeper size. There are some yellowmouth trout mixed in. Hopefully, this trend will continue through December.

Redfish have also turned on, with many rat reds feeding around oyster beds in feeder creeks to the ICW. Larger slot sized reds are available in the same waters and also at the jetties. Some bull reds are still being caught far up the river in deep water. This leads me to believe there is a resident population of these fish that stays in the river year round.

Sheepshead are biting well at the jetties and around bridge pilings and other structure. Ring tailed porgies are mixed in. Bluefish can appear anywhere in our waters at any time. Both these species are good cold water fish. A few flounder are being caught but not in large numbers.

The surf fishing for whiting has picked up. Bluefish are also in the surf. You can target the whiting by using fresh dead shrimp. The blues love cut bait. The weather has turned colder and windier, but the fishing remains hot.

Good fishing1
