what kind of fish is this?

Post by rayvflorida »

caught in Central FL (Orlando area) in a self-contained man-made freshwater pond that also contains bluegill and LM Bass. it is about 20 inches long and probably 8-10 lbs....reminded me of carp fishing, but i don't recall carp having that kind of mouth! Thanks for any help...

My guess is that it's a bowfin. The angle of the shot makes it had to be sure.
Some people call them mud fish, and other names are grinnell, choupique and dog fish.
They are tough fighters and will hit a bait with savage abandon. They have also been around for 100 million years!
Nice fish.
