Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak

Steve Bertschi along with his sons, Theo, age 8, and Charlie, age 6, and their grandfather, Richard, all from Illinois chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316. We had three generations of fishermen on the boat, with Theo and Charlie being our designated anglers on this trip.

Twenty minutes after leaving the dock, fishing lines were at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale in 120 ft. of water, 1.8 miles from shore. We started off trolling with two #8 plainers down, both with sea witches and double hooked Bonito strips. For surface baits we went with four Ballyhoos. As we trolled the reefs, the two young anglers took turns reeling in six Bonitos while their father and grandfather recorded their actions.

From there we decided to make a drop with a live bait on one of our wrecks located in 220 ft. of water. Our first angler up was Theo as he reeled in a 30 lb. Amberjack. Pictures were taken and the fish was released. We reset and it was now Charlie’s turn. The rod bent over – hooked up!!!! Charlie reeled in his fish while his father held the rod. After a twenty-five minute battle, Dave, our mate, put a Black Grouper in the boat.

It was time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316, while watching the plasma TV.
